There are many mixes that can be used to construct asphalt pavement. General categories include dense- graded, gap-graded, and open-graded. Each mix may be used in a number of situations. Selecting the right mix will result in the most economical pavement with good performance.
You will take away:
- What mix types are appropriate for different conditions including traffic, environment, and appearance
- A procedure for selecting mixes for different layers of the pavement
- How to determine binder grades for your pavements

John Carlo, Inc. Nominated for Sheldon G. Hayes Award
John Carlo, Inc. has been nominated for the Sheldon G. Hayes Award for their project on I-94 in Macomb County. This project completed in June 2008 and was awarded the Quality in Construction Award by NAPA in 2008. John Carlo placed over 260,000 ton of hot mix asphalt on this project. The entire project has seen excellent pavement results as well as excellent ride quality.
The Sheldon G. Hayes winner is determined through a two-year process. Highway pavement projects using more than 50,000 ton of HMA are eligible for consideration. Initially, the project must win a Quality in Construction (QIC) Award, and then the project may be considered for the Sheldon G. Hayes Award. The top- ranked projects from each year are tested for smoothness, and then visually inspected by an independent pavement consultant with many years of experience in the industry. John Carlo, Inc. will be competing with eight other projects nationally for the top honor of the Sheldon G. Hayes Award.
