12SP-501J-03 ACCEPTANCE OF HOT MIX ASPHALT MIXTURE ON LOCAL AGENCY PROJECTS

The special provision for acceptance of HMA on local agency projects is now posted on MDOT's website. The specification includes provisions for qualified samplers and testing labs. Some of the details on fulfilling the requirement for "qualified samplers" are still under discussion.

The timeframe for reporting QA test results is specified as follows. For projects with less than 5000 tons, test results must be completed within 14 days. For projects with 5000 tons or more, test results must be completed within 7 days. This revised special provision should begin being used with the April 3, 2015 letting.

Northeast Asphalt, Inc. Wins Sheldon G. Hayes Award

"Congratulations to Northeast Asphalt Inc. of Green Bay, Wis., and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation - Northeast Region for winning the 2014 Sheldon G. Hayes Award for work on 8.1 miles of State Trunk Highway 22 from Gillet to Oconto Falls in Oconto County.

At the Awards Breakfast during the NAPA Annual Meeting, Northeast Asphalt's Kevin Gannon spoke about the company's project, which required the road to be widened, the construction of new ditches, and utility conflicts. Northeast Asphalt is a sister company of Payne & Dolan, and part of the Bechthold Family of Companies. Gannon credited the leadership of the Bechthold family and a corporate culture that stresses quality workmanship that exceeds expectations as a contributing factor in winning the award. "We are blessed that we have so many team members with the mindset that this is a career, not just a job. We have a few of us representing a company here, but the award winners are everyone involved - from the assistants, QC department, mechanics, management, the DOT, and our main customer the traveling public."

Finalists for the award were Koss Construction Co, of Topeka, Kan., and the Arkansas State Department of Highway and Transportation for work on Interstate 40 in Prairie County, Arkansas; Norris Asphalt Paving in Ottumwa, Iowa, and the Iowa Department of Transportation for U.S. 34 in Wapello County; and Payne & Dolan of Waukesha, Wis., and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation - Southeast Region for Interstate 43 from STH 83 to STH 164."
