MDOT Issues Instructions for Ignition Furnace Method
MDOT is allowing two possible methods for determination of asphalt binder content under the current PWL Specification. The department has issued the following documents regarding this new method:
1. Contractors Instructions - for providing QC oven correction factor and submitting samples to MDOT for determination of the QA oven (and Central lab oven) correction factors.
2. MTM - 319 -12 - modifications to AASHTO T- 308
MDOT Issues Permissive WMA Special Provision
Recently, MDOT posted the Special Provision for Warm-Mix Asphalt (WMA) Permissive use, dated 04-23-12, on its website as a frequently used special provision.
Under this SP, the contractor may elect to furnish a WMA mixture using a water-injection foaming device or water foaming additive for Superpave Mix Types E03/LVSP, E1, E3, and E10 in lieu of the standard Superpave HMA specified.
The special provision will be included in all MDOT trunkline projects and should begin appearing in the June letting proposals.
MDOT Seeks Cooperation in Sampling Materials
The association has been recently advised by MDOT that they asking the industry for their full cooperation in obtaining required materials samples either on the paving site or at the HMA production plant. Two areas were emphasized:
1. Binder witness samples obtained from the HMA plant while the plant is running
MDOT must obtain a certain number of witnessed Binder samples from the plant during production.
2. Mini - Stockpile sampling method for mixture sampling for hand patching and other applicable areas. The mini stockpile method is an approved method and must be used when requested by the QA sampling personnel.
The department would appreciate everyone's cooperation throughout the 2012 paving season.
