APAM Local Road Workshops a Success
In February, we held our annual 2012 Local Road Asphalt Workshops. These half-day workshops were held in eight locations across the state to share information on the use of asphalt pavement for local roads and how asphalt provides cost effective solutions for maintenance and rehabilitation of Michigan's roads and streets. The workshops highlighted the following subjects:
- Selecting the right mix for your project
- Maximizing your pavement dollars through the use of RAP
- How to maintain your roads using asphalt
- Longitudinal joint construction
The workshops were held in Romulus, Bay City, Okemos, Gaylord, Marquette, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Novi. Thank you to all of the 250 attendees who participated in this year's workshops. Watch the APAM website for posting of the presentations.

Michigan Winners Announced at NAPA Annual Meeting
Payne & Dolan Inc. was the recipient of a Quality in Construction award for M-129 in Chippewa County. The company pulverized the existing pavement, widened the shoulder, and replaced a bridge in the middle of the project. Despite the challenging schedule and difficult weather they produced a smooth asphalt pavement worthy of the award. Great job!
Payne & Dolan was also a finalist for the Asphalt Operations Safety Innovations Award for their cone and barrel mover, which attaches to the front of a paver and moves traffic control devices out of the paving area. Congratulations!

Feel Good Story about Ajax Paving Industries Employee's Generosity
We don't know how this story slipped by us without notice but we are bringing it to you now. We know it will touch your hearts as it did ours.
Last summer, Jeffrey Meade, a member of the US Army was waiting to be deployed to Afghanistan. Things had been tough for the family of 4, wife Jennifer and their two children ages 13 and 2. Their car had been stolen and Jeffrey had been laid off from 2 jobs. The rent was overdue.
While Jeffrey was away at Camp Grayling a man came to their home and publically told his wife Jennifer that they were to be evicted the next day. Ajax Paving was doing work on their street and Joe Landino, Ajax Safety Inspector, overheard everything. He collected over $900 in donations from his fellow safety committee members and brought it to Jennifer that night.
But it doesn't end there. Joe had noticed that the 13 year old daughter's glasses were broken. He took her and her mom to get 2 new pairs, which he paid for out of his own pocket.
And there's more! Landino was able to raise $5000 from Ajax Paving employees across the state, which was then matched by Mark Johnston, Ajax President. They also helped them get a deal on a 2002 Saturn Vue. This very grateful military family was able to pay the rent, catch up on bills and put a little money in the bank.
These wonderful acts of kindness were initially reported by Detroit News columnist Tom Greenwood on September 2, 2011.
We applaud Joe Landino and the other Ajax Paving Industries, Inc. employees for their kindness and generosity.
