CAC Report Quantifies Drastic Need for Increased Transportation Funding
On July 21st, the Citizens Advisory Committee on Transportation Funding appointed by Gov. Granholm reported the state would have to double the funding it's currently spending to $ 6.1 Billion per year in order to maintain basic road quality.
"We have a transportation network that is literally crumbling beneath us," said Gretchen Driskell, chair of the Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC). "This lack of funding is limiting our public transit options and threatening to make many of our roads unsafe. The status quo guarantees our transportation system will continue to collapse."
Some of the committees findings are :
-By 2010, the group is projecting that Michigan could lose an average of $950 million in federal funds because the state is unable to match federal dollars.
- A total of 23,000 road lane miles will need to be repaired or replaced by 2015, while expected funding will pay for only 876 lane miles (3.8 percent).
- Michigan will continue to lose jobs and roads will be more congested because of inefficient freight movement.
-Without doubling of what the state is spending, the group warned that an additional 30 percent of the state's roads would decline into poor condition over the next decade.

The findings of the CAC were presented to the alternative transportation funding task force that will incorporate the findings in its recommendations, due out in October, to the Legislature. The funding task force is charged with finding potential sources of transportation funding to replace or augment the state's 19-cent gas tax.
We would like to thank Jim Klett, APAM's representative on the Citizens Advisory for all of the time and effort he has spent on this important issue.

The Smooth Road
Good News! Kalkaska County has awarded the project using HMA Ultra-Thin in place of a microsurfacing on 14 miles of roads. The roads were used as a detour route for an MDOT project, and the county has received funding for improvements this year.
Chuck is meeting with the MDOT Superior region's new Associate region engineer for development, Mark Maloney, and the region CPM engineer, Allison Hamlin, on July 23rd. He will be discussing the region's use of HMA Ultra-Thin.
He is putting together a porous HMA exhibit for the Oakland County Heritage festival to be held in September. The exhibit will be a working sample of a Porous HMA section of pavement. This should be something we can add to the porous "lunch and learn" sessions as well as take to various conferences.
Chuck is also working on a letter to our customers to send out with an updated HMA Ultra-Thin brochure. This should be hitting the mail in the next week or so.
