APAM Celebrates Holiday Season and Award Winning Teams
 

On December 11th, the association hosted its annual Holiday Banquet and the presentation of the APAM/MDOT Asphalt Paving Awards, at the Kellogg Center on the campus of Michigan State University. It was very festive night as we celebrated our 38th anniversary of the Asphalt Paving Awards Program.

 

Crowd Over 250 people attended and enjoyed the festivities including representatives from MDOT, APAM members, local agencies, county road commissions, consultants and Michigan universities. The evening was filled with cold beverages and great conversation as industry partners celebrated the upcoming Holiday Season and the honored award winning teams.

MDOT Director Kirk Steudle offered opening remarks on the need for the public to appreciate the work that "our contractors do", and he praised the award winning teams for the excellent work completed this year. He also challenged the industry to continue to do our best work because the public has high expectations so we must strive to meet those expectations on every project that we build.

To complete the festivities, Chuck Mills, APAM Director of Engineering announced the winners of the 2014 APAM/MDOT Asphalt Paving Awards as the plaques were presented by MDOT Director Kirk Steudle and APAM's 2015 Vice President Gregg Campbell.

 

This year 64 projects were evaluated in 10 different award categories. The judging committee visited each of the nominated projects, traveling 4,633 miles in 12 days. Each project was rated in the following areas: Appearance, ride, texture, uniformity, longitudinal and transverse joints, edges, utility cover adjustments and degree of difficulty.

 

Congratulations to all the award winning teams who worked on the 18 projects that received the 2014 Asphalt Paving Awards.

MDOT Issues New Bureau of Highway Instructional Memorandums

Hot Mix Asphalt Production Manual

  

The Construction Field Services (CFS) Division has revised the Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Production Manual. The manual has been updated to reflect current practices as well as new/revised procedures. A few highlights are presented below.

    

Section 1: Procedures Manual for HMA Mix Design Processing

Aggregate Requirements-Subsection 3: Added new note "AWI will not be assigned to previously approved mix designs. MDOT will approve AWI for any design that can be used as a top course." (Page 24)

HMA Sample Reduction Procedure  

 Core Handling and Transporting Procedure (Page 67)

* Two additional points added:

- 9. Contractor may provide his own core transport/storage device.

- 10. If no core transport/storage device is provided, the core transporting procedures will be agreed upon at the pre-production meeting.

 

Section 4: HMA Lab and Technician Qualification Program

Section 4 was removed from the MDOT HMA Production Manual and added to Section 5.03.01 of the MDOT Materials Quality Assurance Procedures Manual (MDOT MQAPM).

The HMAOC Laboratory Qualification Committee was involved in the review of the updated manual. Thanks to the Co-chairs Tom Blair, Edw. C. Levy Co. and Adnan Iftikhar, MDOT for guiding the review process. Thanks also to the entire committee and other APAM members who provided comments and suggestions.

Digital Electronic Signature (DES) Validation Procedures

  

What is Digital Signature Validation and why does it matter? All signatures must be authenticated to determine the identity of the document signer(s) and it is the legal requirement that anyone receiving a signature from an external party must authenticate the signature on the document they receive (paper or electronic). Bureau of Highway Instructional Memorandum 2014-10 

Freeway Work Zone Design Guidance

  

MDOT has established the following guidance on lane and shoulder widths when designing a 3R/4R freeway work zone. Projects should have a minimum 11 foot lane, and any shoulder next to an open ditch should be at least 2 feet paved with 1 foot aggregate to the hinge point. Association Past President Honored

Tom Irwin, past president of MAPA, was recently inducted into the Michigan Transportation "Hall of Honor" in Lansing.

The Hall of Honor, a permanent display in the Van Wagoner Transportation Building in Lansing, was established in 1971 to honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to developing Michigan's network of highways, roads, streets, transit systems, railroads, airports, and waterways. Members are elected by a committee representing a wide range of transportation industry organizations. With the inclusion of this year's honorees, a total of 83 people have been inducted into the Hall of Honor.
 
The six honorees for 2014 are Brent Bair, Robert Foy, William Gehman, Thomas Irwin, Joseph Malloure and Gary Taylor.
 
"Thomas R. Irwin, Traverse City, entered the highway construction industry in 1969. He has held prominent positions in state and nation transportation associations throughout his career. He was president and owner of Hodgkiss & Douma Inc. (H&D) from 1984 to 2005. Irwin believes in continuous knowledge growth and personal involvement in order to develop personally and encourage others to develop. He is past president of the Michigan Road Builders Association (now the Michigan Infrastructure Transportation Association), past president of the Michigan Asphalt Paving Association (now the Asphalt Paving Association of Michigan), past state director of the National Asphalt Paving Association, past state director of the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), and past co-chair of ARTBA's environmental committee. He was past president of the Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) Fund board of trustees, serving on the board for 11 years. Irwin received Michigan Tech's Distinguished Alumni Award in 2014 and the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce President's Award in 2003, and other awards throughout the years."

Rieth-Riley Announces Management Changes   R-R logo

Rieth-Riley is pleased to announce Gene Yarkie has been promoted to the position of Vice President of Operations, assuming oversight and direction of all operations in Rieth-Riley's markets. Mr. Yarkie joined the company in 1987 as an Estimator. Over the years, Mr. Yarkie has served as Sales Manager, Area Manager, Group Manager and Regional V.P. of Northern Indiana. Mr. Yarkie earned a degree in Mining Engineering from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario.

 

Replacing Mr. Yarkie as Regional V.P. of Northern Indiana is Adrian Johnson. Mr. Johnson has over 16 years of experience in the highway industry, with an extensive background in construction management, estimating, materials, plant production, and business development. Mr. Johnson earned a Masters of Business Administration degree from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Dennis O'Berski

Dennis passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2014 in his home in Cass City. Dennis Worked for Saginaw Asphalt Paving Company as an Estimator and Project Manager retiring after 40 years of service. APAM wishes to express our sincere condolences to Dennis' family and friends. To view obituary
